Looks like you’re going to have to replace the ODD in order to get it to boot. I did some searching around, and was unable to find maual way to boot this model from a USB device.
It appears to be a BIOS limitation, and not at all uncommon on machines this old. Thanks for the research Not only did Gateway design a laptop that requires disassembly to replace the optical drive, they won’t release a service or disassembly manual for their laptops.

Would 40vtx happen to know of a source for the service manual, or at least instructions to remove the ODD? I may see if I can find one for them.
Post some pics of the machine, maybe it’ll jog my memory. Gateway’s never posted service material online anywhere that I know of.

I was wondering ifsince you will have one open, if its possible to wire the wall charger direct to the lap top, bypassing the battery.
